Wood wool for cleaning udders
08.08.12

Lindner Suisse is marketing a natural udder cleaning material that's been used by the country's dairy farmers for more than 40 years. Agroclean is a wood wool product that is hygienic, has excellent cleaning properties and is easy to dispose of.

This product is naturally clean; ecologically sound; germ-, dust- and splinter-free; and without any timber preservation agents and after it has been used it can be disposed of in the slurry or composted.

Only 6-7g of Agroclean is required for each udder, so a 12kg bag will be sufficient for cleaning more than 1,700 cows. It can be used ether dry or wet. For moist cleaning, the udder wool is placed in a bucket along with a disinfectant agent and topped up with warm water at 40 Celsius.

With traditional wet udder cloths now banned in Switzerland and surrounding countries the use of Agroclean has been on the rise.

A cost comparison of wood wool as against wet wipes for udder cleaning conducted for the Tier und Technik livestock industry tradeshow in 2011 showed that wood wool performed better in terms of cost.

Quite apart from the ecological and hygienic aspects, Agroclean has proved particularly good for udder cleaning. It has a high-profile cleaning effect thanks to its finely porous structure; it provides a superb massaging effect; and its use is animal-friendly.

Current research is being done, to verify earlier findings that the use of wood wool resulted also in a lower / reduced milking time
