Nesting score for animal comfort

When cold stressed, calves will use their fat reserves and nutrients they consume from milk and calf starter to maintain body heat instead of using the nutrients for growth.

Bedding provides a potential effective way for calves to reduce heat loss on those cold days. If the bedding is sufficiently deep, the calf can “nest” and trap a boundary layer of warm air (insulation of heat) around itself.

How deep is deep ?

Calves should have a nesting score of 3 during the winter to help maintain body heat and to reduce

Just Google : Calf Nesting Score and far more info. will pop up.
Four factors were found to be significantly associated with lower total airborne bacterial counts in pen air:

Increase the aerea within the pen

The ideal pen would have two solid sides and a short solid panel limited to about 20 inches high at the rear of the pen. Further enclosure of the pens increases airborne bacterial counts dramatically. If there are multiple rows of stalls within a barn, each row should be separated with an alley several feet wide.

Decreasing pen temperature

Wood shavings and other non-straw bedding materials, covering the floor.
